Carpooling

May 28th, 2008

Gas is now going for about $4.00 per gallon.

Perhaps you’ve heard.

There are a fair number of riders from the greater New York/ New Jersey area and we’re looking to see if we can get some of them paired up for the trip in order to save some gas. It doesn’t take any more gas to get two people here than it does one (provided, of course, they’re in the same car!)

We’ve already had one request for a ride share from New Jersey. He’s got the car and bike carrier, he’s looking for a passenger to help share expenses.

So how about it. Anyone wanna share a ride?

Would you ride around the world to beat diabetes?

March 13th, 2008

Don’t you just love it when your friends and colleagues are amazed you’re going to ride 150 miles in two days or 550 miles in a week?

Well, don’t tell any of those people but there’s a Scottish cyclist who’s put us all to shame. Last month, Mark Beaumont shattered the record for cycling around the world, pedaling 18,000 miles in just 195 days. That’s no typo, he did it in 195 days, besting the previous record of 276 days.

Let’s put that into New England Classic perspective. The mileage Beaumont racked up on his Tour de World is the equivalent of riding 32-plus 7-day New England Classics or 120 two-day rides. At his pace, Beaumont was averaging 92.3 miles per day. If he traveled at our weekly pace of 550 miles, it would have taken him 224 days to circle the globe.

Now, if we’re going to look at his trek by the numbers, let’s measure him in terms of the most important NEC figures – fund-raising dollars. If Beaumont had pedaled to fight diabetes at the minimum rate of $1,800 per 550 miles, he would have raised $57,600 for the American Diabetes Association.

LET’S GET THIS GUY REGISTERED FOR THE NEC!

But don’t let all these numbers make you feel like the feat of completing the New England Classic pales in comparison to Beaumont’s accomplishment. Sure he traveled through 20 countries but let’s see him negotiate Kennebunkport while keeping an eye open for just the right gift shop or clam shack. And maybe he triumphantly crossed the finish line at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, but has he experienced the joy of arriving at UNH the first day of the NEC knowing an all-you-can-eat dinner awaits in one of New England’s finest college dining halls? I think not.

Rather than being blown away by all those miles Beaumont cycled, I say we take on a greater challenge. If we can get 125 cyclists to join the two-day NEC, collectively they alone would ride 18,750 miles, eclipsing Beaumont’s distance. Add 75 seven-day NEC riders pedaling a combined 41,250 and we rack up 60,000 miles, equal to more than three trips around the Earth.

And you want to talk about big numbers? If we put that many riders on the road, it’s quite possible to raise more than $275,000.

Impressed by Mark Beaumont? You ain’t seen nothing yet.    Register today.

New Year’s Resolution

January 2nd, 2008

Every year, we all make New Year’s resolutions.  Well, here is one that I am asking you all to make:  Riding the New England Classic in 2008.

The New England Classic is a 2 or 7 day cycling event that starts on July 12, 2008 in Woburn, MA.  The 2 day event covers 150 miles through MA, NH and ME and the 7 day event covers 550 miles and includes VT.  Whichever length you choose, we promise you a great ride, with great support for an important cause – finding a cure for diabetes.

If you have any questions,  please contact me at flinsky@diabetes.org or by phone at 888-342-2383 x 3456.

Your time and commitment riding in the New England Classic can do a world of good for more that 20 million Americans with diabetes.  So mark your new calendar today and get ready for this great event.  You can also put in the Rider Reunion and Info Day of February 2, 2008 (see post below).

Every 21 seconds someone is diagnosed with diabetes.  Every 21 seconds there is a new reason to ride.  Won’t you make the resolution to join us on the New England Classic this July?  I hope so.

Rider Reunion and Roundup

December 19th, 2007

Already longing for those days when four hours on the road means a 60-mile bike ride on a beautiful summer day, rather than 20 miles in a snowstorm, in your car on the highway? Do you miss hanging with a crowd that’s proud to sport spandex in public? Well have we got a can’t-miss event for you!

It’s the American Diabetes Association’s New England Classic Rider Reunion and Roundup, fittingly scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 2 – that’s right, Groundhog Day. Whether that rodent sees his shadow or not we’re getting together to reminisce, share photos, make plans for next July, welcome new riders, and those interested in joining us for your favorite adult summer camp for cyclists. We’re just starting to put together plans for the 2008 NEC and this is a chance to put in your 2 cents on the route, rest stops or anything else you care to make suggestions about.

Remember: This is your ride and it’s our fight. Our fight to help the ADA as it works to find a cure for diabetes and improve the lives of people affected by it every day. So please join us to experience a little bit of July in February in the Grace Conference Room, Higgins University Center at Clark University in Worcester from 1 p.m. to 4 pm. For directions, click here.

Any questions? Call Faith Linsky at the American Diabetes Association at 888-342-2383 Extension 3456.

Greetings From The Chair

November 13th, 2007

As a veteran of the last sixteen New England Classic events, both as a rider and a volunteer, I have found the NEC definitely to be a great time (new friends and beautiful scenery), as well as a great ride that raises much needed funds for our fight to find a cure for diabetes. The American Diabetes Association’s New England Classic bicycle tour has raised well over $2 million dollars since it started in 1992, and our goal is to raise the next $2 million dollars as quickly as possible. I am asking for your help to reach this important goal. So please take a few moments, commit yourself to this effort, register to participate, and get your friends, family and co-workers to support you. You may even find that some of them want to be a rider or a volunteer for the event. I always say, the more the merrier. Start up a team, give it a name, and challenge yourselves to personal goals. As you can tell, I care about this effort, and I am committed to finding a cure for this terrible disease. If you want to help us reach this goal simply register on this web page – just use the link to the right. Should you have any questions about the ride, please feel free to contact me at 1-860-447-1791 extension 4916 or via my email address, william.a.lacy@dom.com. Thank you for your support, and I look forward to seeing you in July 2008 as we strive to support the ADA in their efforts to find a cure for diabetes!!
